Armor Ceramics

Ceramics is endued with properties such as high strength, high melting point and hardness, low specific density. It has become an irreplaceable material in armor application. Alumina ceramics has been widely used due to its low cost.

Compared to the alumina, silicon carbide ceramics has higher hardness but lower density, which can reduce the weight of armors, Withal its econo-mical cost makes it to be suitable in body armor application. Boron carbide is harder than alumina and silicon carbide, but its density is only 2.52 g/cm 2 , which is 1/3 of steel armor. Hence boron carbide material is a good candidate for ultra light weight armor to be used in aircraft and body armor against the threat of strong ammunition.

The alumina, silicon carbide and boron carbide tiles developed by LT have excellent mechanical properties and low porosity. They are used in armor panels for protection according to level NIJ 3 and NIJ 4 in the US standard. Tiles for shrapnel-proof jacket are also available, which can withstand the 1.1 gram standard shrapnel at speeds up to 1700m/s.
